Roads Australia (RA), the national stakeholder body for roads, has welcomed today’s introduction of the first of the Victorian Government’s planned clearway changes in Melbourne.
RA Chief Executive Ian Webb said the decision on standardising clearway times, although not an easy one for the Government, was nonetheless right.
“Notwithstanding the concerns of retailers, this is a case of serving the greater good,” he said.
“We can and must make better use of our existing road infrastructure as part of an integrated solution to urban congestion.”
Mr Webb says the success of traffic management strategies in Sydney during the recent Papal visit demonstrates that a more flexible, pragmatic approach to the operation of key urban roads can make a significant difference to traffic flows.
