Bill Griggs graduated in medicine from the Unversity of Adelaide in 1981. He also has dual specialist qualifications in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, a tertiary aerospace medicine qualification from the University of Otago and has completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Adelaide.
He joined the Consultant Staff of the RAH in 1989 and assumed his current position as the Director of the Trauma Service in 1995. Major areas of clinical interest include acute trauma, disaster mass casualty management, pre-hospital care, and aeromedical retreival.
He is perhaps best known for his work in disasters. He was deployed to manage evacuations and victim care for the Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005, the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, the 2007 crash of Garuda 737 GA 200 in Yogyarkarta, the 2009 Ashmore reef SIEV36 explosion/fire, and he led the SA medical team responding to the 2009 Samoa tsunami disaster.
He has completed many hundreds of aeomedical retrievals and is also Director of Retrieval Coordination for MedSTAR - the State's statewide retrieval service.
He has worked for over 30 years for the SA Ambulance Service as both a volunteer paramedic and as a doctor.
In 1989 he invented a surgical instrument and procedure for performing tracheostomies, now known as the "Griggs technique". This was used to help Pope John Paul II in 2005 and is used to help thousands of patients worldwide every year.
He has a strong interest in road safety and is the founder of the Roads2Survival community road safety program.
