Roads Australia is a not for profit, non-political industry association which embraces stakeholders in the Australian road transport sector.
Roads Australia champions the interest of a vital national asset, Australia's road transport system and provides a forum for policy development, networking and communication.
Roads Australia represents the common purpose of all of its stakeholders in the well being of Australia's road transport network. It is proactive in representing the interests of the network in areas such as safety, integration with other systems, research, use of improved technology, resource allocation and improved asset utilisation.
It draws attention to the importance of our road network to the economic and social fabric of our nation. Roads Australia seeks to ensure that information and decision-making in relation to our road transport is well informed and reflects an appropriate level of priorities.
In areas such as these Roads Australia clearly champions the interest of a vital national asset. This is reflected in Roads Australia's industry policy paper.
Roads Australia does not, however, engage in lobbying activities within the province of its individual stakeholders.
Roads Australia seeks to work in a cooperative relationship with decision makers, including local, state and federal governments, in the development of public policy.
Roads Australia also provides a forum for interaction between its members and other industry players, including governments. In so doing, Roads Australia itself does not adopt political positions. Rather, it provides a forum in which all industry participants can work together effectively in the interest of a vital national asset.
In March 2005, at a summit of industry leaders the Federal Minister for Roads, Hon Jim Lloyd MP, launched Roads Australia as the National Peak Body for Australia's road transport stakeholders.
Roads Australia is also active internationally. Roads Australia represents the International Road Federation (IRF) in Australia and the current President of Roads Australia, Ray Fisher, serves on the World Executive Board of the IRF.
In 2005 Roads Australia led the Australian delegation to the IRF World Meeting in Bangkok, comprising representatives of the Federal Government, three State Governments and the private sector. In 2006 Roads Australia led a major mission to China, including federal and state government representatives.
In 2007 Roads Australia will participate in the delegation led by Austroads to the World Road Association world meeting in Paris.
See Membership for further details of the membership, including the important role which the Roads Australia plays as a forum for existing industry associations.
