Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister, Scott Emerson, used the occasion of this month's Brisbane industry lunch to announce that the next round of disaster recovery tenders for $276 million had been fast-tracked.

More than 180 road industry leaders were on hand at the lunch, sponsored by 2013 RA Patron, Altus Traffic.

Mr Emerson told guests that the next round of work would see important repairs get under way to the Captain Cook Highway, Landsborough Highway, Flinders Highway, Warrego Highway and the Bruce Highway.

The projects are being delivered under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements, a joint Federal and State initiative.

Under these arrangements, the Australian Government provides 75 per cent of the funding, with 25 per cent from the Queensland Government.

Mr Emerson said with the inclusion of flood recovery works and asset management contracts, $1.7 billion in road works would be out for tender across Queensland in coming months.

DELIVERING FOR AUSTRALIA'S MOST IMPORTANT ASSET

Photo of the Main Eastlink Interchange

Australia's national road network is a $280 billion plus asset.  As the peak body of road industry stakeholders, Roads Australia provides a national forum for debate and discussion on how we can best manage, fund, maintain and renew this vital economic asset for the benefit of all Australians.

Roads Australia members are the 'who's who' of the industry. Our fold embraces all the state road agencies,  major constructors and engineering consultants, paving and road operating companies, service and equipment providers, freight and motoring interest groups, the union movement and related industry associations.

In 2012, Roads Australia hosted 70 key industry networking and policy events around Australia, attracting some 4,600 participants. Our two largest networking activities are the annual national Summit and our one-day forums of industry leaders held every six months to review the state of play for the nation.   These events are attended by some 200 industry representatives from about 80 companies.

Roads Australia also contributes to policy development - not through lobbying but by working in collaboration with policymakers.   Our unique and broad membership profile enables us to bring industry and government together 'inside our tent', enabling stakeholders to work together in a spirit of co-operation rather than confrontation.

Roads Australia is not for profit and non-political, but it does stand for the industry’s common interest in what’s good for Australia.

  • More than three quarters of all passenger kilometres travelled in Australia occur on roads.
